The green revolution of the 1950s has been one of the greatest successes of humanity: immense gains in agricultural yields have been achieved and it is estimated that half of the world’s population is alive as a direct consequence of synthetic fertilizers1. Adding the invention of pesticides and antibiotics also allowed us to produce food with a level of output productivity and reliability never previously imagined. Still, by 2050, humanity will need to feed 9 to 10 billion people. This will require expanding food production by about 50% compared to today’s levels
